Fulham’s first official pre-season game ended in a 3-0 win over Cork City on Saturday afternoon.

Fulham’s first official pre-season game ended in a 3-0 win over Cork City at their Turner’s Cross ground on Saturday afternoon.

A brace from 18-year-old Stephen Humphrys had put the Whites in control at the break, and an almost completely different side made sure in the second half courtesy of Matt Smith’s bullet header.

After a cagey opening, Fulham had the first chance 10 minutes in when Scott Parker won possession before slipping a ball into Humphrys’ path. The youngster skipped beyond a challenge to work a pocket of space, but his powerful strike was beaten away by Matthew Connor in the City goal.

The striker only had to wait six more minutes for the opener. Tom Cairney sliced the home defence open to free Floyd Ayité down the left, and his cross and was diverted home by Humphrys from six yards out.

Excellent link-up play between Cairney and Ayité then ended with the latter slipping Ryan Sessegnon in after the 16-year-old had burst forward from left-back. His low strike had plenty of power but again Connor was equal to the effort.

It was 2-0 in the 25th minute but it was down in large to a mix-up at the back. A ricocheted ball was nodded backwards by centre-back Shane McInerney, but he didn’t know Connor had come for it and headed over his ‘keeper. In the confusion Humphrys managed to catch up with the ball and poke it into an empty net.

Jokanović made 10 changes at the break, with Michael Madl the sole survivor, but that didn’t disrupt his side with Cauley Woodrow arcing a fine effort towards the top corner that just flew over with less than two minutes played of the second half.

But the third came shortly after when Kavanagh floated over an inviting cross to the far post where Smith was waiting to power home with a firm header.

Kavanagh caused problems for the home defence 56 minutes in when his lofted corner was difficult to defend, allowing Dennis Adeniran to stoop a header towards goal that fell a yard wide of the post. The Irishman then sent over another cross from the left that found Smith, but his header was easily held by Connor.

A rapid counter-attack following a Cork corner in the 65th minute ended with Woodrow getting half a sight of goal, but his left footed shot on the spin was blocked by a defender and went behind for a corner.

It should have been four moments later when Woodrow took the ball in his stride and laid it off to Luca de la Torre, but the American struck too closer to Connor who was able to smother.

Woodrow had worked tirelessly since his introduction and on 70 minutes showed good footwork to make a yard for a shot outside the area, but his well hit strike didn’t quite have the bend and just missed the target.

A diagonal pass from de la Torre then sent Smith in behind, but his attempted lob came at the wrong angle and never really threatened. Soon after, Ream was brought back on to give Madl a break.

With nine minutes remaining Ream should have added his name to the scoresheet when Smith nodded a Kavanagh free-kick back his way, but the American defender could only direct his header wide of the post from close range.

More good work from Woodrow on 85 minutes culminated in him getting to the byline and cutting back for de la Torre whose first time effort was always rising and ended up in the stand behind the goal.

With the game reaching its conclusion, City’s substitute goalkeeper David Coffey pulled off a fine save to repel Lasse Vigen Christensen’s drilled first time strike after he was picked out by Woodrow.

And in the 90th minute Kavanagh picked a Cork defender’s pocket before squaring to Smith who tried to delicately send a shot towards the far corner, but Coffey read it and got down quickly.

Coffey was having a stormer in his cameo appearance and he thwarted Woodrow in stoppage time after the striker had dribbled 40 yards and beaten two men, with what proved to be the final action of the afternoon.
