A late penalty saw Fulham slip to a narrow 2-1 defeat by Real Betis on Saturday evening.

A late penalty saw Fulham slip to a narrow 2-1 defeat by Real Betis at the Estadio Ciudad de Lepe in Huelva, Spain, on Saturday night.

Cristiano Piccini caught everyone by surprise when he opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, with his halfway line chip executed to perfection, but the Whites restored parity through Cauley Woodrow’s brilliant strike.

There were chances for either side after the restart, but it was the La Liga outfit who edged ahead with two minutes remaining when Joaquin netted from 12 yards.

Betis had two half chances inside the opening 10 minutes, but a fine sliding tackle from Tomas Kalas denied Ruben Castro, before Piccini sent a tame effort into the wrong side of the net.

Denis Odoi then headed marginally wide following good wing play by Floyd Ayité, while at the other end Dani’s strike deflected a yard over.

The Spaniards had been full of tricks and took a deserved lead midway through the half in exuberant circumstances. Piccini spotted Button off his line but still had plenty to do considering he was around 45 yards from goal, but his chip was perfect and nestled in the back of the net. Button was hardly at fault, though, as no danger seemed at all imminent.

Ayité drew a good save from Dani Gimenez just after the half hour mark as Fulham looked for a way back, something they managed to do in the 37th minute through Woodrow’s fine strike.

After being found by Ryan Sessegnon on the edge of the box, the striker held off his marker to turn and smash an unstoppable shot high into the postage stamp of the goal.

The Whites started the second half more positively than they had the first, and a slick flowing move from the back five minutes in culminated in Ayité taking aim from 20 yards, but he scuffed it slightly and the keeper was able to claim.

An inviting Tom Cairney free-kick was met by Michael Madl at the far post just after the hour mark, but he sent his diving header wide of the target.

Fulham had been the better team in the second period but Betis almost went ahead in the 78th minute from a corner, only for their header to come back off the crossbar.

And it was the locals who ended up taking the spoils late on. After Malone was adjudged to have tripped his man in the box, veteran winger Joaquin – who’s a legend at the club - stepped up to send Button the wrong way and end the Whites’ unbeaten pre-season record.
