Fulham were denied all three points at Elland Road as Chris Wood’s stoppage time goal cancelled out Tom Cairney’s world class opener.

Fulham were denied all three points at Elland Road as Chris Wood’s stoppage time goal cancelled out Tom Cairney’s world class opener.

The Whites were the better side throughout and hit the post either side of half-time through Sone Aluko’s shot and Matt Smith’s header.

We had to wait until the 77th minute for the breakthrough, but it was well worth being patient for as Cairney curled home a breathtaking strike from an acute angle at the ground where he started his career.

It looked as though the 100 per cent start to the season would be maintained, but Wood’s acrobatic sucker-punch in the 93rd minute meant we took only a point home from West Yorkshire.

On his birthday, Slaviša Jokanović made one change to the side that beat Preston North End last time out, handing 16-year-old Ryan Sessegnon a league debut at left-back in place of Scott Malone, who dropped to the bench where he was joined by new signing Jozabed.

Fulham had the first effort on target 13 minutes in following good play by Sessegnon. He skipped beyond a challenge to get to the byline and dink over a cross to Smith, who headed into the arms of Robert Green.

The teenager was causing problems again for the home side six minutes later. After Aluko had broken with pace and found him following a Leeds corner, he arrowed a cross towards Floyd Ayité at the far post, who was just muscled out of making a connection from a matter of yards out.

But it was the Yorkshire outfit who had the best chance in the 27th minute when Marcus Antonsson capitalised on some hesitant defending to burst through, only to drag his shot wide of the far post.

Just after the half hour mark Aluko made a superb run to latch on to a fine Cairney through ball. He beat the onrushing Green to the ball and rounded him before taking a tumble in what looked like a good shout for a penalty, but referee Christopher Kavanagh wasn’t interested.

Fulham were growing as an attacking threat, though, and a crisp move moments later ended with Aluko hitting the post after a clever turn in the box. The ball actually ricocheted off the sprawling Green’s back, but United were able to clear before a man in red could take advantage.

The barrage continued as Sessegnon was allowed time to shoot from the corner of the box, but he couldn’t control his effort and skied his strike.

Despite Fulham controlling most of the play there was a hairy moment five minutes before the break when Stuart Dallas’ cross seemed to practically roll across the face of goal, but the Whites got away with it.

Five minutes after the break Sessegnon made a chance of out nothing when he robbed a Leeds defender a matter of yards from goal. He then lashed in a shot on his weaker right foot that Green parried behind from a corner.

That then almost brought about the opener when Smith towered above everyone to connect with Cairney’s delivery, but his bullet header crashed against the post and was cleared away.

The first card was handed out 54 minutes in to Denis Odoi for a foul on Kemar Roofe.

And the Leeds midfielder was involved again a minute later as his snapshot brought a save from David Button, who then denied Kalvin Phillips moments later.

Despite the lack of goals it was a thoroughly entertaining game, with Ayité getting fans off their seats when his 20-yarder whistled just wide of the post in the 56th minute.

United then made the first substitution of the evening as Ronaldo Vieira came on for Dallas.

Sessegnon was playing with a confidence that belied his tender age, and after his intelligent run was picked out by Scott Parker he just fizzed his shot wide of the target under pressure from a covering defender.

Fulham then made a change as former Leeds striker Smith was withdrawn to a standing ovation from all sides of the ground, with Cauley Woodrow coming on in his place.

Woodrow was immediately involved as his strong hold-up play in the area presented a half chance for Ayité, but the Togo international lost his footing as he went to strike and his effort didn’t reach the goal.

The roles were then reversed as good wide play from Ayité saw him set up Woodrow, but the striker couldn’t get the ball out from under his feet quickly enough, which allowed Leeds to block his shot when it did come.

The 71st minute saw Leeds make their second change, with Alex Mowatt coming on for former Valencia and Swansea City playmaker Pablo Hernandez.

A positive run by Woodrow five minutes later saw him beat two Leeds players before being unceremoniously barged off the ball 25 yards out by Kyle Bartley, presenting his side with a promising opening from the free-kick. Aluko took it but saw his strike hit the wall.

Leeds couldn’t clear the danger, though, and when Kevin McDonald played a short pass to Cairney on the corner of the box, he spun and bent in a simply phenomenal strike that was going wide until it curled back in at the last millisecond to find the net. A quite remarkable effort from a man who appears to be getting better with every game.

With eight minutes to go Jokanović replaced his Captain Parker with Ryan Tunnicliffe.

Leeds had struggled to create much throughout but squandered a gilt-edged chance with four to play when Antonsson found Wood at the far post, but the big striker could only head into the ground and over the bar.

Jozabed was then introduced for his Fulham debut, in place of Ayité.

Four minutes of added time were announced and in the third of them Leeds snatched an equaliser. Fulham were unable to properly clear their lines and when the ball was lumped back in, Wood was there to send an overhead kick beyond Button and earn his side a scarcely deserved point.
