Fulham completed the double over table topping Newcastle after a 3-1 win on Saturday.

Fulham completed the double over table topping Newcastle United by adding to their 1-0 win over the Magpies at the Cottage in August with an emphatic 3-1 victory at a packed-out St James’ Park.

Tom Cairney opened the scoring in the first-half with another fantastic left-footed effort and then Ryan Sessegnon scored two early second-half goals.

Substitute Daryl Murphy closed the gap with 15 minutes remaining and despite an extra-time penalty missed by Fulham the Whites did enough to see out the match.

The fixture marked the one-year anniversary in charge of Newcastle for Manager Rafa Benitez and his team went into the game at St James’ Park undefeated in their last 11 league matches.

There were two changes to the starting line-up that faced Leeds United on Tuesday night as Head Coach Slaviša Jokanović brought in Denis Odoi and Sessegnon to replace Ryan Fredericks and Chris Martin, both of whom dropped to the Fulham bench.

Benitez made four changes to his Newcastle team after a disappointing goalless draw with Reading in the week, Dwight Gayle, Vurnon Anita, Mohamed Diame and Christian Atsu replaced Daryl Murphy, Jesus Gamez, Ayoze Perez and Yoan Gouffran.

The first chance of the game came when Paul Dummett broke down the left on the sixth minute and whipped the ball into the box but Atsu slipped and Fulham, playing in red, recovered possession.

After a quick throw in, Newcastle found Jack Colback on the edge of the box who in turn then played in Atsu down the right, Scott Malone was able to sniff out the threat and stopped the danger in its tracks.

Fulham’s first shot came in the tenth minute when after some nice link-up play from Neeskens Kebano and Sone Aluko, Cairney fired in an effort from range which he was unable to keep down on this occasion.

The opening goal came five minutes later and it was Fulham who opened the scoring when Stefan Johansen picked out Malone on the left, who played the ball back into Cairney who did much better with his second attempt.

The midfielder who snatched a last-gasp draw in the week, produced another sublime left footed strike just outside of the box which gave Karl Darlow no chance of stopping.

Jonjo Shelvey then caught Fulham on the break when his through ball found Gayle in the box but his shot was blocked by a sliding Tomas Kalas and went out for a corner.

Fulham then launched a counter of their own when David Button threw the ball out to Cairney who played in Aluko on his favoured right foot but unfortunately his shot flew straight into the path of Darlow.

Moments later Kebano picked up the ball on the edge of the box and worked a good angle to get a shot away, it took a deflection and was inches from going inside the back-post.

In the 28th minute Anita delivered a lofty cross which was met by Ciaran Clark in the centre of the box, Button was at hand to tip over the powerful header.

On 34 minutes, Fulham broke down the right and Johansen and Aluko found themselves with only two Newcastle defenders to beat, unfortunately the Norwegian’s pass was intercepted.

In added time Shelvey put in an unnecessarily hard challenge on Cairney and Johansen took the free kick which went over the bar and the half-time whistle was met by a cheer from over 1,000 Fulham fans who made the trip.

Atsu picked up a booking early in the second half for decent as the home team continued to be rattled by their visitors.

In the 51st minute Johansen went on another mazy run and whipped in a teasing cross which was not dealt with by the Newcastle defence. Aluko picked up the ball and performed a tidy back-heel to the rampaging Sessegnon who smashed home Fulham’s second from close range.

Newcastle were then spurned on by the crowd, after numerous attacks around the edge of the box Matt Ritchie put in a teasing cross which was met by Gayle’s head and had to be pushed over the bar by Button.

As the Magpies pushed forward they were caught on the break as Sessegnon added his second and Fulham’s third. Aluko charged forward drawing in the entire Newcastle defence, leaving Sessegnon open on the left and able to calmly place his shot past Darlow.

Fresh after giving away another foul on Cairney, Diame was substituted and replaced by Murphy in the 61st minute as Newcastle searched for an attacking edge to their game.

Two minutes later Benitez made his second substitution, taking off Clark for the Spaniard Gamez.

Fulham continued to dominate the pace of the game and keep the majority of possession much to the frustration of the home crowd, on a rare Newcastle attack Kevin McDonald picked up a yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Murphy.

Still searching for their opening goal, Newcastle took off their top goal scorer Gayle and brought on Gouffran in the 74th minute.

The substitutions began to work as one minute later, Murphy pirouetted away from the Fulham defence on the edge of the box and peeled in a shot which was too good for Button to stop.

Shelvey then picked up a yellow card for a nasty challenge on Cairney for the second time in the game.

Fulham thought they were in trouble in the 83rd minute when Gouffran streaked through one-on-one with Button but thankfully for the visitors the offside flag was raised.

Jokanović reacted to the improved Newcastle performance by bringing on the more defensive Fredericks for Kebano a minute later.

With two minutes to go Gohi Cyriac replaced a very impressive Aluko who had left his mark on the match with two assists for Sessegnon.

Newcastle continued to foul Cairney and in the 89th minute Dummett picked up a booking after leaving a rough challenge on Fulham’s opening scorer.

With five minutes being flashed up by the fourth official Malone put in a cross and Sessegnon was bundled over in the box by Dummett and referee James Linington awarded the penalty to Fulham which was put wide by Tim Ream.

Fulham then used their final substitution bringing off Johansen for Scott Parker to see out the match.

Malone was then booked soon after for giving away a foul and then kicking the ball away. Newcastle continued to threaten but to no avail and the final whistle was blown giving Fulham the 3-1 victory.
