Fulham made it a hat-trick of 3-1 wins with victory over Aston Villa at the Cottage on Easter Monday.

Fulham made it a hat-trick of 3-1 wins with victory over Aston Villa at the Cottage on Easter Monday.

The Whites went in front after 17 minutes when Ryan Sessegnon reacted quickest as his own shot came off the crossbar, with Villa then reduced to 10 men shortly after when Jonathan Kodjia lashed out at Ryan Fredericks.

The visitors produced an equaliser in the early stages of the second half when Jack Grealish curled home a fine strike, but Sone Aluko didn’t need long to volley his side back in front.

Neeskens Kebano then made sure of the three points with an accurate finish following good work from Stefan Johansen.

Slaviša Jokanović made one enforced change to the side that defeated Norwich City on Good Friday, with Sessegnon replacing the suspended Chris Martin after the appeal against the striker’s dismissal proved unsuccessful.

The best openings inside the opening two minutes both came down Fulham’s left flank, with two teasing Scott Malone crosses narrowly eluded their targets in the middle.

It was the other wing that bore some joy on the quarter hour mark when Fredericks used his pace to get to the byline, but his cutback was pelted behind by the Villa defence.

Two minutes later it was close to being 1-0 when Aluko jinked his way into the box, only to be denied by a stunning Sam Johnstone save.

But the Whites didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough, with Sessegnon bagging his seventh goal of the season. After his initial volley from a Fredericks cross came off the bar, the youngster was first to react to bundle home the loose ball.

It was all Fulham and in the 19th minute Malone sent in his third wicked cross of the game, which marginally escaped the flicked heel of Aluko.

Villa had struggled to get going at all and they were dealt a massive blow when Kodjia was sent off with just 22 minutes played. After fouling Fredericks, he decided to kick the stricken Fulham man and was subsequently given his marching orders following a discussion between the referee and his assistant.

Jordan Amavi was next to leave his mark on Fredericks, hacking him down with a wild challenge in the 26th minute, for which he received a yellow card.

More than half an hour was played before Villa went close, with Gary Gardner’s volley from 20 yards deflecting behind. Tommy Elphick got on the end of the subsequent corner but saw his diving header blocked by Fredericks.

Fredericks had enjoyed a storming first half and went close with a fierce 25 yarder in the 39th minute, but it flew over the crossbar.

Marcus Bettinelli was then called into action at the other end, but he was equal to Gardner’s daisy-cutter.

In the second minute of time added on in the first half, Tim Ream went within an inch of doubling Fulham’s lead. Tom Cairney’s skewed volley fell kindly to the American who placed his shot towards the far post, but it went a whisker the wrong side of the upright.

Villa restored parity five minutes into the second half through a stunning Grealish effort. The winger cut inside from the left and bent an unstoppable strike beyond the reach of Bettinelli and into the postage stamp of the goal.

Soon after, Gardner was booked for hauling down Johansen, although it’s unclear if the card was for the foul or the verbal bashing he gave the referee after. Jokanović then brought Kebano on for Malone.

Seconds later Fulham were back in front. Fine forward play from Floyd Ayité saw him find Aluko whose volley deflected off Nathan Baker to leave Johnstone with no chance.

Scott Hogan was then booked for giving Bettinelli a bear hug as the Fulham ‘keeper tried to launch a counter.

On 62 minutes a magical Aluko touch saw him kill the ball dead in the area. He then beat his man and fizzed a pass towards Kebano, but the substitute wasn’t able to sort his feet out when the venomous ball reached him and it went behind for a goal-kick.

Kebano then stood a cross up towards Cairney in the area, but the Fulham captain sent his header wide under pressure from his marker.

Midway through the second period the Villa goal found itself under strain once more. This time Johnstone parried a wicked Kebano cross into the path of Aluko, but his drive towards goal was deflected behind.

With 20 minutes to play, James Bree was replaced by Alan Hutton, before the Villans later brought Rushian Hepburn-Murphy on for Amavi.

Fulham were desperately craving a third goal and Aluko drew another save from Johnstone in the 79th minute, without really troubling the Manchester United loanee.

But that two goal cushion was just around the corner. Johansen surged forward and slid in Kebano, who had an acre of space following the withdrawal of left-back Amavi, with the Congo international smashing a low strike across goal and inside the far post.

Villa then made their final change, as Hogan made way for Conor Hourihane. And with four minute to go, Aluko departing to a standing ovation and was replaced by Lucas Piazon.

No further action was forthcoming, as Fulham’s promotion charge continued in style.
