Ryan Sessegnon’s stoppage time strike earned Fulham a point against Burton Albion on Tuesday evening.

Ryan Sessegnon’s stoppage time strike earned Fulham a point against Burton Albion on Tuesday evening.

The Whites had all of the play in the first half at Craven Cottage and calved out a number of promising openings without finding a telling finish.

That proved costly as soon after the restart the visitors broke the deadlock courtesy of Jackson Irvine’s precise shot from 20 yards.

A combination of deep defending and game management from Burton gave the Whites an uphill task to equalise thereafter, something they eventually managed to do in the 93rd minute when Sessegnon capitalised on a goalkeeping error.

Slaviša Jokanović made five changes to the side that suffered a first defeat of the season on Saturday. Michael Madl’s suspension meant a debut for Ragnar Sigurdsson, while Scott Parker returned from illness in place of Stefan Johansen. Neeskens Kebano and Sessegnon also came in for Floyd Ayité and Scott Malone, while Chris Martin was given a first start up top in place of Matt Smith.

After a lively start by the visitors, it was Fulham who created the first decent opening five minutes in. Tom Cairney’s disguised pass slipped Sone Aluko in behind the defence, but his shot was saved by Jon McLaughlin. The Burton goalkeeper couldn’t get the ball properly under control, but his defence were eventually able to clear their lines.

Albion responded in the 13th minute when Stuart Beavon drove at goal and let fly from distance. His strike was clean and rising towards the top corner, but David Button watched it all the way and caught it simply enough.

Lovely link-up play down the left flank between Kebano and Sessegnon ended with the latter firing in a low cross that just evaded the outstretched toe of Martin who had got in front of his marker.

Sessegnon’s runs from left-back were causing the Burton backline no end of problems, and in the 20th minute he was picked out again, this time by a sublime Kevin McDonald pass. The 16-year-old went low with his delivery once more, and it was almost put into his own net by John Brayford, but the ball just went the wrong side of the post.

With 24 minutes on the clock Sessegnon was at it again, but this time getting on the end of Aluko’s clever pass. He cut in towards goal but perhaps overran the ball slightly, allowing McLaughlin to smother his shot.

The Whites were winning a plethora of corners and almost broke the deadlock from one in the 32nd minute when Tomas Kalas headed Cairney’s delivery across the face of goal, but nobody was on hand to poke it in.

Burton were well and truly under the cosh but were presented with a half chance five minutes before the break when Beavon had time to tee up a 20 yard volley, although it was comfortably dealt with by Button.

A minute later Martin was clearly having his shirt tugged in the penalty area, but it escaped the view of referee Mr Robinson.

Albion made one change at the break, replacing Damien McCrory with Ben Turner.

Despite it being all Fulham in the first half, they found themselves behind within six minutes of the restart. Beavon held the ball up before laying it off to Irvine on the edge of the area, who coolly side-footed his effort into the bottom corner.

With Burton happy to play with 11 men behind the ball having taken the lead, it was proving harder to create opportunities, although Cairney managed to work some space for himself 20 yards out just before the hour mark, only to bend his effort off target.

Nigel Clough then made his second change of the evening, as Jamie Ward came on for Beavon, while Jokanović switched things up with the introduction of Smith in place of Kebano.

In the 65th minute some patient build-up play ended with Cairney dinking a ball over for Martin to run on to, but his left-footed effort was parried behind for a corner by McLaughlin, from which the striker looped a header over.

Two minutes later a wayward McDonald shot dropped to Smith 12 yards out, but his strike on the spin went some way off target.

By this point the home fans were furious with the amount of time wasting that was going unpunished, with McLaughlin taking an eternity to distribute every goal-kick.

Aluko then tried his luck after cutting in from the right flank, but his left footer was straight at McLaughlin.

With quarter of an hour to go, Turner was given the game’s first card for a foul on Aluko, but infuriatingly advantage wasn’t played after the Fulham forward had ridden the challenge and looked to break.

The Whites then made a double substitution, as Martin made way for Ayité and McDonald was replaced by Jozabed. Moments later Sigurdsson was carded for an unfair challenge on Chris O’Grady.

Although it was all Fulham now, Ward was given a sniff of goal in the 84th minute when he latched onto a ball over the top, but he volleyed wide of the far post.

Shortly after, the home faithful greeted the referee’s decision to finally book McLaughlin for time wasting with ironic cheers, which soon turned to exasperated moans when it became apparent the ‘keeper was just getting a talking to.

Jozabed was then given a sighter of goal, but his dipping volley from just inside the box flew over.

Six minutes of added time gave Fulham hope, and after a horribly late challenge from Ward on Kalas that earned him a yellow card, Sessegnon hauled his side level. Aluko’s shot was parried backwards by McLaughlin, and his scoop away to prevent it crossing the line went straight to the youngster who slammed home.

With a couple of minutes still to play the home side continued to press for a winner, although in the end they had to settle for a point, which was the very least they deserved.
