Fulham’s season began with a 1-0 win over title favourites Newcastle United at Craven Cottage on Friday night.

Fulham’s 2016/17 Sky Bet Championship season began with a 1-0 win over title favourites Newcastle United at Craven Cottage on Friday night.

At the end of a quiet first half in which Sone Aluko had gone closest with a vicious shot, Matt Smith broke the deadline just before the interval with a pinpoint header from Captain Tom Cairney’s corner.

There were chances for both sides after the break but Whites fans will care little that no more goals were forthcoming, as they got their campaign off to the perfect start.

Slaviša Jokanović handed seven players their competitive debuts, with David Button in goal behind Denis Odoi, Tomas Kalas and Scott Malone. Michael Madl completed the backline having signed permanently in the summer. Ryan Tunnicliffe and Kevin McDonald took up their positions in the middle of the park, with Cairney, Aluko and Floyd Ayité in front of them. Smith led the line on his own.

Newcastle were presented with a golden chance in the 10th minute when Odoi brought down Ayoze Perez right on the edge of the box. Odoi was booked for the foul but thankfully that was as bad as it got as Perez blasted his effort straight into the wall.

Chances were at a premium but Aluko thought he had a good case for a penalty 26 minutes in. He darted towards a wayward back-pass and was chopped down by Grant Hanley, but the fact the centre-back just got a toe on the ball probably got him out of trouble.

The Magpies had a penalty shout of their own 10 minutes later when a cross went behind via Tunnicliffe’s arm, but the referee Simon Hooper deemed it to be accidental.

Aluko had been a livewire in a quiet game and went as close as anyone in the 41st minute when at the end of a darting run he fired in a dipping shot that was spilled by Matz Sells, with Smith then penalised as he followed up.

But we didn’t have to wait long for the breakthrough, with Smith expertly glancing home in the final minute of normal time in the half. Cairney’s outswinging corner was faultless and Smith found plenty of space, allowing him to direct his header into the corner and beyond the reach of Sells.

Newcastle looked certain to equalise eight minutes after the restart when Vurnon Anita’s cutback after being sent into space was met first time by Matt Ritchie, but his low strike was brilliantly saved by Button.

Mr Hooper had certainly been kept busy during his night’s work in SW6 and he had another decision to make in the 57th minute when Aluko went down in the area, but once again he waved the protests away.

Just after the hour mark the visitors made an offensive switch when Jack Colback was replaced by Rolando Aarons.

Ritchie then tried his luck from 25 yards, but his well struck hit was watched all the way by Button who held onto it coolly.

The Whites had a let-off in 66th minute when Madl, who was having an excellent game, inadvertently flicked the ball into Aarons’ path, but the substitute fluffed his lines and couldn’t connect properly with his shot.

Two minutes later Hanley was booked for popping the ball out of Button’s hands as he went to release it.

Jokanović then made a double change to bolster his midfield, with Scott Parker and Lasse Vigen Christensen coming on for Smith and Tunnicliffe. The switch meant Aluko moved into a more attacking role.

And Fulham almost went further in front straight after when Malone and Ayité played a neat one-two, but the former’s placed shot went a yard wide of the far post.

Rafa Benitez then made his second change of the evening, as Adam Armstrong replaced Perez.

Paul Dummett went into the book with quarter of an hour left after a terribly late challenge on Odoi who had roasted him. The home fans wanted red but Mr Hooper let him off with a booking.

Wonderful skill from Ayité then set up a shooting chance, but his bending strike was caught by Sells.

In the 77th minute Newcastle made their final change as Jonjo Shelvey came on for Isaac Hayden. And with six minutes left Fulham swapped their left-back, as Malone made way for Tim Ream.

A neat move down the right then ended with Odoi finding Christensen with a precise cutback, but the Dane leant back as he shot and blazed over.

In the third of four minutes added on Fulham were indebted to Button who manage to scoop a deflected cross from out under his crossbar. Daryl Janmaat then went into the book for what can only be described as throwing a tantrum, even though his side had just been awarded a free-kick.

Thankfully that came to nothing as the Whites held on for a superb victory that sent them, temporarily at least, to the top of the league.
