A rampant display saw Fulham defeat Reading and claim a second 5-0 win in three Craven Cottage matches.

A rampant second half saw Fulham claim a 5-0 victory over Reading at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon.

The Whites were the dominant force in the first 45 but only had Chris Gunter’s own goal to show for their efforts.

We didn’t have to wait long for number two, though, with Chris Martin confidently firing home in front of the Hammersmith End shortly after the restart.

Danny Williams was then sent off for Reading – who had won their previous five Sky Bet Championship fixtures – and Fulham extended their lead with quickfire goals of top quality from Sone Aluko and Stefan Johansen.

Martin added some gloss to the scoreline in the 90th minute when he found the target with a free-kick, ensuring the home supporters went home from a baltic Craven Cottage with wide smiles frozen onto their faces.

Slaviša Jokanović made two changes to his backline for the game, with Ryan Fredericks replacing the suspended Denis Odoi, and Tim Ream coming in for Ragnar Sigurdsson.

The game was preceded with a minute’s silence in memory of those who tragically died in the plane crash in Colombia earlier in the week.

Fulham started brightly, and after failing to make the most of Ali Al Habsi’s hashed clearance, had the first attempt of the game inside two minutes when Kevin McDonald got on the end of Johansen’s free-kick, although his header was straight at the Royals goalkeeper.

Floyd Ayité then had the home crowd on their feet won he intercepted a sloppy Reading pass high up the pitch. He breezed beyond Paul McShane – who was reluctant to make a challenge having just been booked – and sent a rasping strike towards goal from 20 yards. Al Habsi could only spoon it upwards, but recovered before it threatened to cross the line.

The Whites were having all of the play, with Malone next to cause the visitors problems when he cut inside Gunter and tried to place a shot towards the far post. Al Habsi was alert to the danger, though, and did well to palm away.

The relentless attacking continued in the 14th minute when Aluko beat his man and drilled a loss cross into the box where Ayité had lost his man, but the Togo international smashed his volley almost over the entire Putney End.

It mattered not, though, as the deserved breakthrough arrived a matter of seconds later. Fredericks’ ball into the area was dangerous as hell, and Gunter could only nod it into his own net.

It was almost two a minute later, with Fredericks again a menace down the right. This time his square ball found Johansen, but he was denied a clean strike by a brave block.

In the 20th minute Aluko intercepted another lax pass and had time to aim one towards goal, but a Reading defender stuck a head in the way to repel the danger.

The Royals then had their most threatening moment when they won possession on the halfway line and looked to break, but Fredericks made a vital saving tackle to win the ball back. He hurt himself in doing so, but thankfully was alright to continue following some treatment.

Fulham were back on the front foot straight away with a swift move after Ream came out on top of a crunching challenge. We quickly moved the ball up to the other end of the pitch with Tom Cairney who slipped in Martin to his right, with the striker’s shot taking a deflection and heading behind for a corner.

The loanee then managed to get a head on Ayité’s set-piece, but Al Habsi was equal to his near post flick.

Another good chance was carved out 33 minutes in when Johansen spotted the run of Aluko. October’s Player of the Month gave Al Habsi the eyes and tried to drill it into the postage stamp, but it flew a yard over.

He then became the first Fulham player booked when he mistimed his challenge on Jordan Obita five minutes before half-time.

The Whites faithful were then infuriated when referee Mr Langford opted against booking George Evans, despite two nasty challenges from the midfielder in the space of a minute.

Reading had to wait until the 44th minute for their first effort on goal, and it wasn’t really worth it as Garath McCleary ballooned high and wide from the edge of the box.

With the Brighton result fresh in the memory, Fulham were understandably craving the cushion of a second goal, and it arrived within four minutes of the restart in some style. Martin took the ball forward with purpose, picked his spot from distance, and fired low and hard into the bottom left hand corner.

Obita then found himself yellow carded after scything down Fredericks who had burst beyond him.

Martin will be disappointed with himself for failing to double his tally for the afternoon from the subsequent free-kick when he nodded over from close range after he was found by Johansen’s pinpoint delivery.

Another chance then fell his way almost immediately when Ayité cut the ball back to him 12 yards out, but he was off balance as he struck and his effort sailed over.

Reading’s afternoon went from bad to worse in the 54th minute when Williams was dismissed for lashing out at Johansen after the two had contested a 50-50 ball.

The visitors were losing their heads and Joey van den Berg was next in the book for a late lunge on Fredericks. Manager Jaap Stam then introduced Liam Kelly for Roy Beerens.

The free-kick was then eventually taken, with Johansen unlucky to see his inswinger drop inches wide.

Credit to the Berkshire outfit, they didn’t throw in the towel and went as close as they had all game in the 58th minute when Obita found space at the back post, with his volley smothered behind for a corner.

Fredericks had enjoyed a storming game on his return to the starting XI, and he was needed to make a crucial tackle on Dominic Samuel just after the hour mark. As the last man it would have been a penalty and a red card if he’d got it wrong, but the right-back timed his challenge impeccably.

Reading should have halved the deficit soon after when Evans rose highest to meet a free-kick from the right, but he headed straight into the palms of the grateful David Button who made his first save of the day.

At the other end, Cairney twice dropped a shoulder to work some space on the edge of the area before letting fly, with Al Habsi pushing his swerver around the post.

Aluko then made it three with a fabulous solo goal. After showing sublime skill to twist between two Reading players out wide, he bore down on goal and placed an accurate strike inside the far corner.

There was concerns initially as the linesman ruled it out for offside as he incorrectly though Martin had added a final touch, but after a review Mr Langford allowed it to stand. It would have been a travesty if Aluko was denied such a special goal because of a poor decision.

And it was four moments later with Johansen adding his name to the scoresheet, and there was more than a touch of class about his effort, too. Picking the ball up as he darted into the box, he evaded three defenders and coolly poked a shot into the net with the outside of his left boot. Al Habsi, who had only conceded once in the five games previous, didn’t even move.

Jokanović made his first change shortly after, with Aluko departing to a standing ovation as he made way for Lucas Piazon.

Fulham were refusing to settle for just the four goals, and only a fine reflex save by Al Habsi denied Martin another as he sent a clever header back across goal after being picked out by Tomas Kalas.

In the 81st minute Fulham were convinced they should have had a penalty when Piazon went through one-on-one after Martin had sent him through with a flick-on. The Brazilian shaped to shoot before being bundled to the floor, but the claims were surprisingly waved away. One wonders why he would go down when he had a clear sight of goal if he wasn’t fouled?

Johansen then exited the field of play to a rousing reception, with Club Captain Scott Parker coming on in his place.

A beautiful Cruyff turn from Cairney then allowed him to burst into the box from the right, with his powerful strike from an acute angle beaten away by Al Habsi.

Ayité then departed to make way for Neeskens Kebano, before Evans was finally booked for a clumsy challenge on Cairney.

In the final minute of normal time Martin got the second goal his play deserved. After winning a free-kick 20 yards out, he dusted himself down and placed an accurate finish into the far corner.

He almost made it a hat-trick in stoppage time with a swivel and shot, but his kick took a deflection and Al Habsi saved simply enough. That proved to be the final action of a wonderful second half, as Fulham won 5-0 for the second time in three home matches.
