Fulham’s trip to Austria and Germany ended with a 2-2 draw at the home of SV Darmstadt 98 on Saturday afternoon.

Fulham’s trip to Austria and Germany ended with a 2-2 draw at the home of SV Darmstadt 98 on Saturday afternoon.

Darmstadt captain Aytac Sulu had an eventful first half, scoring a comical long range own goal, before restoring parity at the right end with a firm header.

An excellent Ryan Fredericks strike put the Whites back in the ascendancy after the break, but the spoils were shared courtesy of Marvin Mehlem’s effort.

The first sight either team really had of goal arrived in the 13th minute when Terrence Boyd sprayed a nice ball out to Fabian Holland on the left, whose cross-shot needed tipping behind by Marcus Bettinelli.

He was then called into action following the subsequent corner when Kevin Grosskreutz steadied himself and shot hard and low from 20 yards, but hit it straight at the Fulham stopper.

The Whites took the lead in quite remarkable circumstances on 17 minutes when centre-back Sulu pinged a powerful pass back towards his own goal, but didn’t realise his keeper Daniel Fernandes Heuer was nowhere near it.

Darmstadt looked for an immediate response and Boyd drew a save from Bettinelli who needed to palm over his looping effort.

Bettinelli should have been tested on the half hour mark when Peter Niemeyer found space at a corner, but he ballooned his header over when he really should have been hitting the target at the very least.

In the 34th minute Tom Cairney released Aluko at the end of a Fulham counter. The forward twisted beyond his marker to work a shooting opportunity from a tight angle, but Fernandes was equal to his effort.

Fulham’s first change arrived three minutes later when Ibrahima Cisse came on for Cairney.

Sulu made amends for his earlier mistake shortly before half-time. Boyd’s dummy at a corner caught the Fulham defence cold, and the defender stole in to bullet a diving header into the corner of the net.

Within two minutes of the restart Bettinelli pulled off his best save of the game when Artur Sobiech, one of several changes for Darmstadt at the break, nodded towards the corner, but the 25-year-old showed good agility to tip it past the post.

Soon later some good work by Cisse got him into a crossing position where he picked out Floyd Ayité, but his first time effort was beaten away by replacement goalkeeper Joel Mall.

Sobiech will be wondering how he didn’t score in the 55th minute, as he blazed miles over from a yard out after the ball dropped kindly for him in the area.

Cisse was attacking with purpose in the second half and he will be disappointed not to have hit the target after good link-up play with Ayité, instead dragging his shot wide from the edge of the box.

Stefan Johansen was given a yellow card on 62 minutes. Despite getting the ball, the referee deemed that he had gone in too aggressively.

The Norway captain then made way for Matt O’Riley.

Fulham quickly took the lead thereafter when Fredericks netted a fine solo strike. Having found some space in the box, he collected O’Riley’s pass and dropped a shoulder to beat his man before rifling in a clinical finish on his weaker left foot.

Sobiech missed another chance to open his account, but the hosts were level before too long as they won possession in a dangerous area, with Mehlem applying the finish.

Cauley Woodrow then came on for Aluko.

The game was so open in the closing stages, with the sides taking it in turns to attack. One such chance saw Holland within shooting range, but he blazed well over with what proved to be the final opening of the encounter.

The Whites now return to London to prepare for their final pre-season friendly against German opposition again, when VfL Wolfsburg visit the Cottage next Saturday.
