Fulham were beaten 3-0 by VfL Wolfsburg in their final pre-season fixture of 2017.

Fulham were beaten 3-0 by VfL Wolfsburg in their final pre-season fixture of 2017.

The visitors shaded an even first half at Craven Cottage, with John Brooks’ header the difference at the interval.

And while the Whites enjoyed a real spell of dominance after the break, a well taken brace from 70-cap Germany international Mario Gomez ensured victory for the Bundesliga outfit.

Fulham started positively and had all the openings, albeit half ones, in the first 10 minutes, with Ibrahima Cisse and Oliver Norwood both seeing shots blocked, while Sone Aluko had the ball plucked off his toes by The Wolves goalkeeper Koen Casteels after being played in by Stefan Johansen.

The visitors’ first sight of goal followed, though, with Daniel Didavi scuffing tamely at Marcus Bettinelli, with Riechedly Bazoer dragging a shot wide from 20 yards eight minutes later.

Bettinelli had to be replaced just after the half hour mark, and the incoming David Button was called into action within 60 seconds, getting down smartly to smother Didavi’s cutback.

Fulham conceded a simple goal on 36 minutes when Didavi launched a long free-kick into the area to the unmarked Brooks, and the €20m man was able to direct his header back across goal and inside the far post.

Johansen found himself booked moments later after going in hard on Robin Knoche.

The half ended with good work from Lucas Piazon who fed Aluko 25 yards out. He squared to Ryan Sessegnon who let fly from distance, but his dipping effort missed the target.

Wolfsburg could have doubled their lead inside a minute of the restart when Landry Dimata’s tidy footwork created an opening in the box, but Button saved his low drive well.

Johansen drew a fine fingertip save from Casteels in the 54th minute when he bent a low free-kick around the wall after Norwood had been scythed down on the edge of the box.

The Whites were improving and another free-kick created a chance moments later when Aluko was smartly played in by Johansen before flashing a wicked strike across the face of goal.

The attacking was relentless and the equaliser was threatened again in the 57th minute when Cisse hung up a cross for Johansen, but the Norwegian hit his volley over the bar.

Camped permanently in Wolfsburg’s half, Fulham came again. Aluko was once more the threat, wriggling into space in the box and seeing his shot deflect over.

The Whites’ high press then saw possession won just outside the Wolfsburg area. A plethora of bodies inside the box meant a clear-cut opening was hard to find, with Ryan Fredericks going closest with a fizzed ball across goal.

A fantastic ball over the top from Ignacio Camacho on 70 minutes sent Gomez in on goal, but he smashed his shot well off target under pressure from substitute Denis Odoi.

Cauley Woodrow had also been introduced in the second half, and he got on the end of a free-kick he won himself in the 72nd minute, but got under the ball and headed over.

Wolfsburg made the result safe when they carved their way through on 79 minutes. A beautifully weighted pass from Yunus Malli slipped Gomez in, and the man who has scored 30 goals for Germany made no mistake with a cool finish.

The illustrious frontman grabbed his second shortly after, expertly glancing another esteemed international Jakub Blaszcykowski’s pinpoint cross beyond Button.

Gomez came close to a classy hat-trick in the final minute of normal time when he flicked Blaszcykowski’s ball towards goal, but it dropped just wide of the far post, which proved to be the final chance of the game.
