Tom Cairney’s second against Charlton Athletic has been voted as the comfortable winner of the February Goal of the Month competition, in association with Coral.
The midfielder already had one fine strike under his belt to open the scoring against the Addicks, but it was the result clinching third goal of the game that secured 53.7 per cent of your votes.
Following a short corner, Luke Garbutt’s dangerous delivery was not properly dealt with by the Charlton defence, who only cleared it as far as Moussa Dembélé on the edge of the box. His flick sat up kindly for Cairney who was several yards behind him, and he watched it drop until the perfect moment when he unleashed a controlled, low dipping volley that flew into the far bottom corner.
Cue what is now a customary knee-slide from the 25-year-old.
Cairney’s goal was way out in front of its nearest rival; Ross McCormack’s clinical finish which opened the scoring at Queens Park Rangers. That took 16.8 per cent of the vote, while Ryan Sessegnon’s dramatic late equalising volley against West Ham United’s Under-18s came third with 14.8 per cent.
