The 1996-97 season represented significant
progress as one of the worst periods in Fulham’s
history drew to a close. Marooned down in the fourth tier of the English
game, Micky Adams took over as player manager
and thanks to his efforts and the 23 goals from
Scottish striker Mike Conroy, Fulham earned
promotion back to Division Two.
The Cottagers came so close to adding the
Division Three title and were only pushed into
second place by the narrowest of margins. Both
Fulham and Wigan Athletic finished with the same
points and total goal difference, but Wigan took
the crown by having scored more goals over the
course of the season.
