ALLAN CLARKE – HIS FULHAM YEARS
Allan Clarke was Fulham’s record signing in 1966 from Third Division Walsall aged just 19. He soon became a prolific striker, able to score effortlessly with both feet, and was also one of the best headers of a ball in Fulham’s history. He was fearless and got in where it hurt, specialised in overhead kick goals and even took the team’s penalties.
He was one of those players who could always seem to find that extra half-yard of space in the box. He could also make goals for colleagues. His final goal haul was a total of 57 goals in exactly 100 games. In his two seasons with Fulham in all competitions, Clarke scored against every team to represent the First Division except for Chelsea and the team he would ultimately join, Leeds United.
His strike rate of 0.57 goals per game remains the second highest rate in Fulham’s entire history. He scored in almost 40% of the games in which he played for the Cottagers.
In 1968, with Fulham now in the Second Division, Clarke joined Leicester City for a league record transfer fee of £150,000. A year later, he broke that record again joining Leeds for £165,000. He remains the third-highest goalscorer in Leeds’ history.
This is the story of his Fulham years.
It is a hardback book of 168 pages, with over 130 photographs, many never seen before and shows all but two of his Fulham goals. The book will be published in December and is available for pre-order.
Allan himself has described the book as: ‘fantastic, truly wonderful’ saying that ‘it brought back so many happy memories’’
