The excitement of the mid-1970s at Craven
Cottage with Best, Marsh and an FA Cup Final
appearance gave way to more difficult times for
Fulham at the decade progressed.
Bobby Campbell’s period in charge ended with
relegation to the third tier in 1980 and he was
replaced as manager by Malcolm McDonald. The
former England international centre-forward
stabilised the club and set it on an upwards
trajectory with a promising new team featuring
Ray Houghton, Paul Parker, Tony Gale and the
prolific striker Gordon Davies.
