The second-half of the 1980s was a difficult and turbulent time for Fulham with the club dropping into the lower reaches of the third tier of the English League. With young manager Ray Lewington in charge, a decent 1988-89 campaign took the Cottagers into the play-offs, but the 1989-90 season showed a marked decline.

For much of the season the Fulham squad found itself caught up in a relegation battle, with the eventual 20th placed finish just a point and a place ahead of Cardiff City in the relegation zone. Clive Walker and Gordon Davies battled hard to score the goals to keep Fulham up and Walker finished the campaign as the club’s top scorer.
